If you are thinking of taking up Edmonton guitar lessons, it is better to first get yourself a guitar to practice your guitar lessons at home. With so many types of guitars in the market, including electric, acoustic, nylon string and steel string guitars, here are some tips to help you choose the right guitar.

First of all, you have to buy a guitar within your budget. Though you shouldn’t buy the first guitar you see, remember that the more you pay, the better the guitar usually is.

You have to choose your guitar based on the type of music you plan take guitar lessons for. If you plan to play rock music, an electric guitar is a better choice while a semi-acoustic guitar is better if you plan to play jazz, country and blues. If classical music and smooth jazz is more your type, then an acoustic nylon string guitar is a better choice.

If you plan to buy a guitar for your child, its better to buy a ½ or ¾ size guitars as children find it difficult playing regular guitars and will soon loose interest in their guitar lessons because of this. If affordable, electric guitars are a better choice, at least a second hand version, as they are easier to play because of small necks, and light, thin strings.

There are no staunch rules to follow regarding the type of wood used in making the guitar. However it’s better to compare sounds from various guitars on an amplifier in the store, before you buy it. Dark wood like koa and mahogany tend to give darker tones than the lighter, vintage type woods.

Check the neck finish as it affects how quickly you can move your hand along the guitar neck. Quality is very important while choosing guitars, so just because one mahogany guitar may sound bad, it does not mean that all guitars are similar. Try out different guitars and you will definitely find the right guitar for yourself.

The guitar should not only have looks, but also some features. It should have a die-cast machine head so that you can accurately tune your guitar for it to stay in tune longer. Solid top guitars made from 2 solid matched pieces glued together are a better quality guitar than laminated top guitars. They give more even and accurate sounds that produce a sustaining vibration in the guitar body.

Make sure you are comfortable holding and playing the guitar while no matter if you sit or stand. So spend some time holding the guitar before buying it.

In a nutshell, your budget, the guitar sound and how comfortable you are with the guitar are the three main points to consider before you buy your guitar. With trial and error, you are sure to find the right guitar for your private guitar lessons.

Changing guitar strings is something all guitarists should know, but find intimidating. However with the right instructions and practice, it isn’t really that difficult to change guitar strings. Follow these steps to change your acoustic guitar strings. Changing strings in electric guitars however is slightly different.

First you have to decide how you intend to restring your guitar. You can remove and replace each individual string or unstring and restring all the strings together. By restringing the strings one at a time, it is possible to maintain most of the tension at the neck. However removing all the strings makes cleaning the guitar easier than lifting each string individually and wiping around them.

Once you’ve decided how you intend to change strings, you have to loosen strings and clip them using nippers or loosen and remove them through the tuning pegs using a peg winder.

Next, you have to remove the bridge pins which are black or white knob-looking things on the inside of the guitar. New bridge pins or a new guitar are stubborn to remove. However though you may be tempted to remove them using pliers it is better using a bridge pin puller instead. It is better to lay pegs in the order you remove them so that you can easily place them back in the same holes you had removed them from.

After the strings are removed from the peg holes, clean your guitar. Don’t use furniture polish, glass spray or any other household cleaner for cleaning; the guitar shop will give you a decent cleaner for cleaning your guitar. You could always clean your guitar using a damp chamois cloth, diaper or lint-free cotton cloth.

Once your guitar is clean, you have to get your new strings ready to string the guitar. Some guitar strings have color-coded ends to help indicate how they strings have to be tuned. As different guitarists use different methods to restring the guitar, you can choose the method you find most comfortable and convenient for you.

Some guitarists start at the thin end and work upwards or start at the thick end and work downwards. Some guitarists first string the thinnest string, then the thickest, and next, the next-thinnest and next-thickest strings, etc. this method of alternatively restringing the guitar gives a better left-to-right pull to the guitar neck and makes guitar tuning easy.

While holding the string, you have to insert its knob end into the peg hole and re-insert the end peg. As you head towards the guitar, its better to apply some tension to the string.

Once all strings are in its peg holes, stretch it to its appropriate tuning peg and insert its end into the peg hole and leave some string to wind around the tuning pegs. The guitar tuning key has to be turned rightwards to tighten the string.

While tightening the string, each wind should stack below the previous one. This not only looks cleaner, but also prolongs the life of the string. While cutting the strings, cut a bit more than required as you can never add what you cut off but can always cut off excess string.

There are so many different types of guitar strings that guitarists find it difficult to decide what the best type of guitar string is. Individual guitarists have their own individual preferences and choices regarding their guitar strings. While some players consider brand, design and material important in choosing their guitar strings, some concentrate only on the tone of the string.

According to history, it was in the medieval era that stringed instruments like the violin came into use. These instruments were developed with time. You have the lute that is considered the guitar’s predecessor with its long neck, frets and a large sound chamber.

The strings used in these instruments were then made from an animal’s small intestine or gut. The lack of uniformity in these strings created unique and varied sounds, and the vibrations thus lead to tuning difficulties. This was a serious problem for players and composers; which lead to the development of steel strings many centuries later.

Steel strings

These steel strings were created using modern construction techniques that offered uniform diameter and tunes. This is why steel strings have long replaced gut strings on most of the stringed instruments, including guitars.

Basically, taut guitar strings when plucked, produce or sustain vibrations for a short time when compared to the vibrations of bowed instruments. So a factor that guitarists look for while choosing their guitar string is one that produces longer vibrations.

Different strings for different guitars

Regarding guitars, different types of guitars and a guitarist’s playing style requires different types of guitar strings. In case of acoustic guitars, you need four steel strings which are wrapped with bronze coils and two unwound steel strings.

The electric guitars need three nickel wrapped strings of lower tensions while classical guitars use nylon threads instead of steel core wrapped strings. These nylon threads have a plastic polymer that provide the mellow and articulate tone typical to classical guitars.

Special features

Different guitar strings boast of unique features that help boost the performance of your guitar playing. One such feature is hexagonal shaped steel cores of wound acoustic strings. By sheering off the edges of steel core in windings, the strings vibrate longer to produce more intensive, brighter and pleasing tones.

Then there are guitar strings for electric guitars that have greater elasticity than other strings, and is most popular with guitarists who use string-bending techniques while playing the guitar. There are also coated or treated strings that have chemicals that help slow down the corrosion of the strings by preventing corrosive oils from penetrating the metal. However, once this coating rubs off, the string’s quality quickly reduces.

Size

Guitar strings are also measured based on diameter or gauge. The smallest string used in electric guitars is 0.09 gauge; but some players also use strings of diameter 0.08. The wound strings on electric guitars usually range from .24 and higher while acoustic guitars use thicker strings so that they can withstand higher tensions.

Its minimum gauge is 0.12 for smallest strings and 0.56 or higher on wound strings. Basically, the higher is the gauge number, the thicker is the string and the lower the gauge number, the thinner it is.

Anyone who can play the guitar can provide entertainment to anyone and everyone wherever they go. However, it is important that they first learn to play the guitar. To effectively learn to play the guitar, you should first understand and know a few guitar terms.

The action is the height of the guitar string from the fretboard, which can be adjusted using the bridge height.

Arpeggio is the term used when the notes of the chord are played sequentially, one after the other.

The body is the main part of the guitar. It is made of solid wood in electric guitars while hollow wood is used for acoustic guitars. Alder, ash and mahogany are the popular woods used for these bodies.

The part of the guitar where strings are attached is called the bridge. It is usually made of plastic in acoustic guitars and metal in electric guitars. The bridge in electric guitars can be moved to give a vibrato effect because of its tremolo function.

The plastic tapered pin that is used to hold the string in place at the bridge of the guitar is called the bridge pin. It works at trapping the string’s ball end through the slot which the string passes through.

The chord is the term used when more than one note is played at the same time.

Frets are the part of the guitar that is placed at particular intervals to give the desired notes on a scale. They are made using metal wires, which are inserted into the neck of the fretboard.

The fretboard is also called the fingerboard and is the flat part of the neck against which the guitar strings are pressed. It is made of maple, ebony or rosewood, and is glued to the neck shaft. It is based on the wood that the overall sound of the guitar is decided; the darker is the wood, the mellower is its tune.

A half step is an interval of a fret while a full step is an interval of two frets.

10. The head is that part of the guitar at the end of the neck where you find tuning pegs affixed.

11. The headstock is the upper part of the neck where plain ends of the strings are attached. They are basically trademarks of their respective makers and thus helps distinguish between guitars.

12. The interval is the distance or the difference in pitch in between two notes.

13. The nut is located at the top end of the neck. It has strings passing through it and is made of a plastic or bone piece that has carefully cut slots for the different strings.

14. The scratchplate is the thing plastic piece of the guitar that protects the guitar from scratches and wear and tear while playing.

15. The soundhole is the hole found under the strings of an acoustic guitar, near the bridge. Its function is to protect the guitar sound from the guitar body.

16. The truss rod is a hidden steel rod passing through the guitar neck to strengthen it. It prevents the neck from bending under the guitar strings tension and can be adjusted using a hex key.

17. Tuning pegs are the machine heads of the guitar which are turned to change the string’s tension while tuning a string. You can use a peg winder, which is a tool that fits over the tuning peg to make changing of strings easier.

As a guitar player, you should not only know how to play your favorite songs on the guitar, but should also be particular about taking good care of it. With the right care and maintenance, a guitar lasts a long time, and can provide for years of entertainment.
<ol>
<li>First of all, you should make it a point to clean your guitar on a regular basis. As a guitar player, your body oils accumulate on the guitar, along with dirt and grime, to make playing difficult.</li>
</ol>
2. To start cleaning, you have to first wipe down your guitar strings using a soft cloth or towel every time you play the guitar. The guitar store will have a simple guitar cleaning kit that has a string lubricant that you can use to keep your strings and frets slick and shiny.

3. Wipe under the strings to remove all the dirt on the fretboard. This may be a bit time consuming; however if you plan to restring your guitar, this is the best time to do a thorough cleaning of the guitar. Once all the strings are removed, you just have to use a soft cloth to wipe off all the dirt and grime from the fretboard.

4. Make sure you don’t use any water to clean your guitar as it will only spoil the guitar wood, and hamper the guitar sound.

5. While storing your guitar, make sure you store it in a hard-shell case. These cases are found in various sizes; so make sure you buy one that fits your guitar exactly. Even if the salesperson claims the case is right for your guitar, it is better if you try storing your guitar in their presence. This way if the guitar does not snugly fit into the case, you can ask for another case, or get sufficient additional protection and support for it.

6. Though soft bags are okay for storing your guitar, a hard case is more ideal. It provides more and better protection to your guitar.

7. Buy a good guitar stand lest your guitar ends up leaning against a wall or lying on the ground when you don’t use it and lead to guitar accidents and mishaps. This can be avoided if you use a guitar stand to store your guitar and prevent it from warping or tripping over.

8. Your guitar should never be left overnight in the car. It not only gives an opportunity for your guitar to get stolen, the temperature in the car is not right for the guitar. Too high temperatures because of the sunlight can lead to fading or cracking of the guitar’s finish. On the contrary, too much of cold too can damage the guitar neck, inlays and truss rod.

9. For optimum care of your guitar, you can get a guitar humidifier. This is a small device that maintains the humidity level of your guitar, to add years to its life. It fits into your acoustic guitar’s sound hole and if you use an electric guitar, you have to place it in its case.

With the help of these guitar cleaning and maintenance tips, you will be able to increase the life of your guitar, and enjoy playing it for a longer time.

The electric guitar is an interesting instrument that can be played solo or in groups, and to play both popular and classical music. If you too are looking out for an electric guitar, here are some tips to help you find the best electric guitar for your money.

First of all, you have to decide which type of electric guitar you want to get yourself. There are various types available like:

Guitars with a solid body are generally made of hardwood having a lacquer coating and 5 steel strings. They do not have any holes for sound or to accommodate vibrations but sustain longer than guitars with less rigidity because of a hollow body.

The electric guitars with a hollow body have electronic pickups on its body that converts string and body vibrations to an electrical signal.

The electric-acoustic guitars have pickups that don’t produce signals from the string vibrations but from the guitar top or body vibration. This is how this guitar got its name.

There are also seven-string, eight-string and twelve-string electric guitars for you to choose from, based on your guitar playing style and prowess.

Now that you know which types of electric guitars are available, here are the features to look out for while being an electric guitar.

The guitar has to be made of good tone wood. Though electric guitar sounds look to come from its pickup, the sound of the guitar is affected by the type of wood used in making it.

The guitar should be noise free with shields from any extraneous electronic sources that may create humming and buzzing in the computer. They should also be covered with wax or epoxy to prevent any micro-phonic feedback.

Check to ensure the neck joint of the electric guitar is tight and rigid. This ensures that none of the string vibrations get transferred to the neck when you play the guitar.

You also have to check the guitar bridge, which maintains the action and intonation of string height. It is possible to change intonation or action by making adjustments to the truss rod or changes to the string gauge.

The truss rod is an adjustable rod that can be used to correct any changes made to the electric guitar neck curvature.

Besides the features of the electric guitar, there are some other things to look out for while buying your electric guitar.

As electric guitars are expensive, you have to evaluate your level of commitment to the instrument before you buy it. Your budget, the type of guitar lessons in Edmonton you join and your commitment will decide which electric guitar you should buy.

Next, you have to consider your application for the instrument. Basically, electric guitars cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. If you plan to keep the instrument at home to use recreationally, you don’t need that expensive a guitar with that many features.

Last, but not least, with so many types of and features of electric guitars to look out for and compare, you may ask for some help and tips from professional guitar lessons players.

For any string that you want to tune on your guitar turn the key for that string and pluck your guitar to test its sound and pitch. Keep turning the string and keep plucking to test for its pitch, do this repeatedly until you get a sound, and pitch that is similar to that of the instrument that you are using as your reference pitch. Until there is unity between the E string from the guitar and the E from the reference source, your guitar will remain out of tune. An out of tune guitar will always produce a pitch that wavers “dissonance” when it sounds combines with the sound from a reference source or musical instrument.
